Limestone

All limestone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate (calcite). The primary source of the calcite in limestone is most commonly calcified remains of microscopic marine organisms deposited on ocean floors forming coral reefs.

Because of impurities such as clay, sand, organic remains, iron oxide and other materials, many limestones exhibit different colours ranging from dark grey and mustard to brown, pink, yellow and creamy white. Limestone is a much softer stone than marble or travertine and as such is better suited as wall cladding or for low traffic flooring areas. Limestone is used internally and externally on floors, walls and building facades. All limestones are particularly susceptible to acid damage, making acid rain a significant problem. It is therefore imperative to clean all limestone with a neutral or mild alkaline cleaner only and to seal or treat with the correct repellent or sealer. Limestone is available in either polished, honed or natural form.
